The overarching objectives
of the SPOTTR Initiative were to detect reflected laser energy from tactical
targets and demonstrate utility in Air Support (CAS) operations.
The purpose of the SPOTTR Initiative was to produce and demonstrate a laser spot detector with drastically improved performance and functionality. The overall objective of the initiative was to detect laser spots in clear standard visibility conditions at a minimum of 5 km during the day and have a demonstrated night capability.
SPOTTR triples as a 12X visual magnifier, night vision device and a laser spot tracker. SPOTTR provides JTACs with a capability to verify the target being lased and provides positive identification of the target prior to weapons delivery. SPOTTR increases combat capability by reducing the time for target confirmation and talk-ons, thereby speeding up the targeting process and minimizing targeting errors that can result in fratricide or collateral damage.
